Airship basket Dupuy-de-Lôme

Begun during the siege of Paris, the Dupuy-de-Lome was not completed until 1872. Its 6.5 m boat-shaped gondola was topped by a 36 m long hydrogen-filled balloon. The brilliant marine engineer Dupuy de Lôme rejected the option of steam in favour of muscle power, imagining a propeller powered by a hand winch operated by four sailors. The force required was such that two teams taking turns every half hour were needed.
